The collection was discovered by William Heald in an old album in Menlo Park California and includes views of Juneau, Sitka, Koggiung and other Bristol Bay area Native villages and individuals. Some of the photographs are captioned by the photographer. Many of the photographs appear to be personal snapshots of people and places taken or collected by the creator who is unknown. Commercial photographers represented in this collection include J.E. Thwaites, The Photo Shop Studio, F.B. Petersen and Rinear.

John Edward Thwaites was born in Eastwood, Ontario, Canada, in 1863. The family moved to Michigan around 1871. In 1885, Thwaites married Carrie Warne, and the two worked as schoolteachers in Michigan until Thwaites's ill health led the couple to relocate to Florida. Unable to establish a viable career as a teacher, Thwaites applied at the Florida Southern Railroad for a position as a federal Railway Mail Service clerk in 1895.
